The Foothill-De Anza Foundation is proud to rename its annual fund The Martha Kanter Fund, in honor of our chancellor, Dr. Martha J. Kanter, as she leaves the Foothill-De Anza Community College District to take on the mantle of under secretary of education in Washington, DC.
Martha has provided extraordinary leadership for Foothill-De Anza over the last 16 years, for 10 years as president of De Anza College, and for the last six as the district’s chancellor. She embodies the district’s guiding principles of excellence, opportunity and innovation, and enthusiastically supports faculty, staff, students and community friends in doing the same.
Martha has also championed private support for Foothill-De Anza, in her own giving as well as encouraging the contributions of others. She has long recognized that community colleges must build private support to fill the broadening funding gap created by diminishing state resources. She is Foothill-De Anza’s chief fundraiser and has been extraordinarily successful in that role.
A favorite quote of Martha’s comes from Nelson Henderson:
“The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit.”
She has done that in a figurative sense over her entire career. Thanks to her efforts, thousands of students have made their way into the world ready to put their intellect, passion and commitment to good use. Fittingly, our logo for The Martha Kanter Fund will be a tree that represents all of Martha’s students–past, present and future.
With Martha, it’s always about the students. It is our goal, in her honor, to raise support through The Martha Kanter Fund so that Foothill-De Anza always has sufficient resources to offer excellence, opportunity and innovation for generations to come.
