Tony Ruiz wasn't sure what he wanted to do after he graduated from Saratoga High School. The opportunity came for a job at a welding and fabrication shop, and since he had always liked building things he decided to take it. He enjoyed the work and the pay was good, but he was always on the lookout for other options.

Angelica Mantilla Caez moved to the United States from Colombia with her mother when she was 17 years old. Her first education experience in the U.S. was as a senior at Mountain View High School. She got good grades but struggled in a new school and new country.

Mike McCusker began a career as a physicist at Rice University, JILA (Colorado), Yale, and eventually SRI in Menlo Park. He first made the transition to technical industry at Spectra Physics, and then several small and larger organizations in a variety of engineering and management roles. Some years ago he began looking for a "retirement job," where he could share his knowledge of physics, math and business. One of his colleagues suggested he consider working at Foothill College as a tutor in the STEM Success Center.
